Community Developers

In Nova Scotia we have a wide range of rural and urban communities, each facing unique challenges and opportunities.   At Aging Well Nova Scotia, we believe that a community development framework provides us with the best opportunity to help strengthen the community-based senior serving sector – organizations, clubs and groups, big and small, that support seniors to age well in their chosen communities.

Incorporating a number of key principles, we will work to create opportunities to learn from each other, build capacity, and promote improvement and growth that supports the well-being of Nova Scotia’s older adults.

These principles include:

  • Social justice: A commitment to improving the lives of people who are marginalized, oppressed, or excluded.

  • Equity: Aiming to ensure that all people and communities have access to the resources they need to succeed.

  • Self-determination: People and communities have the right to make their own choices and decisions.

  • Empowerment: People are entitled to use their own assets, skills and means, to influence change.

  • Collective action: People's voices are strengthened when they come together in groups or organizations.

  • Working and learning together: Collaboration and sharing experiences is essential to good community activity.

  • Dignity within diversity: Practicing cultural humility, nonjudgmental listening, and accountability.

  • Inclusivity: Addressing the challenges, barriers and gaps oppressing community members.
